We grabbed breakfast and then made our way to Leonard’s Bakery for their famous malasadas. These Portuguese doughnuts are deep-fried, fluffy, and filled with a variety of flavors. We tried the custard, coconut, and guava—and loved all three. Entry was only $5, and it was well worth it. This Buddhist temple is a replica of a 950-year-old temple in Japan and is set against lush green mountains. There’s a peaceful koi pond, a large bell that visitors can ring, and beautiful grounds. We even spotted a peacock walking around! It’s a fun place to stroll around and looks pretty cool. We also made sure to walk along the beach, take pictures with the famous banyan tree, and of course, visit the statue of Duke Kahanamoku. Duke is known as the father of surfing and was a Hawaiian Olympic swimmer. We went upstairs and found the perfect spot by a window, complete with our own little couch and table setup. We were able to sip on our drinks while enjoying the gorgeous view. The ferry ride lasted about 45 minutes, and it was beautiful. Some moments we were so close to shore that you could see homes tucked into the coastline, while other times it looked like we were surrounded by nothing but ocean. The contrast was surreal. We got: The "Tall, Dark & Handsome" smoothie – made with coffee, cocoa nibs, and blackberries. Super unique and genuinely delicious. It gave me a huge energy boost for the day. An acai bowl topped with whipped coconut, peanut butter, and Nutella – this was creamy and flavorful with the perfect texture. Even my boyfriend, who isn’t normally into fruity or “healthy” things, loved it. Angelica’s croissant – buttery, flaky, and perfectly stuffed. A coffee with mushroom adaptogens- earthy, smooth, and packed with the good stuff. Our first stop was the Boston Public Garden. We could not have come at a better time—the cherry blossoms and magnolias were in full bloom, and they were absolutely stunning. I’m talking pink petals everywhere, lining the streets, scattered across the park, and adding a magical feel to the whole city. The trees were mostly magnolias, and the way they framed the skyline was unreal. It honestly felt like walking through a floral fairytale. We also saw the famous Swan Boats, which were so charming and nostalgic. And, I didn’t even know that there’s someone pedaling them! It’s $4.50 for adults and $3.00 for kids, in case you’re interested in going for a ride. While walking through the park, we also saw a ton of squirrels and ducks that came right up to us. They were SO friendly- not what I expected at all. And let’s not forget the vibrant tulips in every color imaginable, all with the city skyline in the background. Our main goal was to see the seals at the Chatham Pier—but unfortunately, we didn’t catch any. We did hear them though, barking away on the other side of the island! The fisherman told us the seals start coming in May, followed by the sharks. Still, it was worth the visit. We grabbed a lobster roll from the Chatham Pier Fish Market that was stuffed. Like, we literally couldn’t finish it between the two of us. It was buttery, fresh, and delicious. We also stopped to see the US Coast Guard Station, which had a lighthouse and a navy boat on display. After that, we drove back to Truro, stopping at a few beaches along the way. Each beach had a different personality—some were all sand, some were entirely made of rocks. I kept finding crab claws everywhere, and even saw some tiny baby crabs. Sadly, the only creature that gave us a jump scare was a fox. Yes. A fox. She was the first to come up to me and allowed me to pet her, which made my heart melt. Later, we got permission from the owners to feed the cows, and we brought out some apples, carrots, and bananas. The cows were a bit hesitant about the apples, but they absolutely loved the carrots and bananas. I spent a good amount of time just hanging out with them, and it felt like such a genuine connection. Right outside the cottage was a firepit, and we took full advantage of it one evening, making s'mores under the clear Tennessee sky. After eating my s’mores, I found myself sitting outside by the fire and stargazing. The s’mores was such a simple gesture, but it made the experience feel even more magical. The owners left a lovely note explaining that the cottage was built over 100 years ago, and many parts of the original structure are still part of the cottage today. Covering a 2.94-mile loop with 13 stations, it offers access to pretty much all of the major attractions. As of 2024, rides are completely free, which makes this a wonderful way to explore downtown Detroit. The People Mover was also pretty empty, most times we were on it, we were the only people on it. It provides not only ease of transport but also panoramic views of the city's architecture and skyline. Known for its extensive ski slopes and winter activities, Blue Mountain Resort offers over 300 acres of skiing for all skill levels. Theres also sledding, snowboarding and many other activities. Positioned with a clear view of the CN Tower, we also enjoyed its colorful light display as we welcomed the new year. Though it was rainy and extremely cold out, this was a beautiful experience. Last year, we spent New Years in Niagara Falls, making it to the firework show right as it started. The show we saw this year in Toronto was spectacular, especially in comparison to the one we saw last year. If you’re debating going to Toronto for New Years, I’d highly recommend it- it’s something everyone should experience at least once. After an exhausting journey—going to sleep at 2 am, waking up at 3 am for our early morning flight from Vermont to New York City, missing our connection, and then deciding to drive from New York to Toronto (over an 8 hour drive!) with brief stops in Pennsylvania for food and scenic views—we finally arrived in Toronto. Despite the rain and bustling crowds, the city's vibrant energy overcame everything. We headed to the Harbourfront to join the city's official New Year's Eve celebrations. From here, we gazed out over the azure waters of Georgian Bay, framed by distant mountains and lush forests on the sides. The panoramic views were absolutely mesmerizing. Continuing along the trail, we encountered several more lookouts, each offering its own unique perspective of the bay's rugged coastline. The trail itself was marked with colored lines on trees, guiding our way through the forest. The water was insanely cold, and the rocky bottom was very slippery as well. Honestly, the only reason I was able to get in because I was pushed in- it was wayyy too cold for me. But, look at this water! It was crystal clear and was so amazing to swim in, after I got pushed in of course. Also, I would definitely recommend wearing water shoes to prevent yourself from slipping. The absence of sand made this spot particularly distinctive and photogenic, especially to me, growing up in Florida and all we have is sand everywhere. We had the choice between using their jet snorkels (basically underwater scooters) or regular snorkels, and we opted for the regular ones. Honestly, for a smaller area like this, I didn't think the jet snorkels were necessary. Most of the people who had them ended up having to turn them off half the time anyway. Before getting in the water, the guides were super strict about me not bringing my GoPro, which was weird. They insisted that they would take better footage than I would, but I’ve snorkeled plenty of times before (and even done seawalking with my GoPro!) and knew I’d rather have my own videos. So, I still brought mine—and I’m so glad I did. We saw about five different sea turtles, and they swam so close to us. We even saw one of them laying at the bottom, perfectly camouflaged into the sand. At the end of the guided part of the tour, they let us explore on our own for a little bit, and that’s when I had the most magical moment. I found a turtle away from the crowd and he swam alongside me for a bit! It was such a surreal experience to be in the water with such a beautiful creature, just the two of us. Then of course my moment of magic faded and he swam away. Still, this was amazing! One thing to note about Playa del Escambrón is that it’s a public beach, so you don’t actually need a tour to snorkel there. Since it’s protected by a seawall, the water is relatively calm, making it a great snorkeling spot. If you’ve snorkeled before, I’d honestly recommend bringing your own gear and going at your own pace rather than taking a tour. We tried this octopus that comes on bread and it was okay… it didn’t have the most flavor but it was cool to try it! (Pictured to the right) Bolinhos de Bacalhau – Portugal’s famous cod fritters, crispy on the outside and soft inside. These were so good! We first tried it in Obidos and loved them, and in Porto they were a hit as well! Empadas de Frango – Small, savory chicken pastries. We tried these at Quinta da Regaleira in their cafe and loved them in both places as well. Portuguese Chocolate – I couldn’t leave without grabbing some to take home! Its stunning blue-and-white azulejo tiles make it one of the most photogenic places in the city. I’ve been to many churches around the world and normally the “prettiest” ones are because they’re so large and grand. I have been to train stations all through Europe and none of them are this beautiful. And you can forget about comparing it to a train station in the US lol. The walls are adorned with 20,000 blue-and-white azulejo tiles, depicting Portugal’s history. If you’re in Porto, this is another absolute must-see! For weeks before the trip, i had been talking about how I HAVE to try sea urchin when in Porto. I’ve never had anything like it so I did not know what to expect, but it was a unique and briny taste. I thought it would be similar to oysters which it was a little bit but still completely different. Would I eat it again? Maybe not the same style that the one I tried was… but cooked differently I may try it again! Still, the view from here was one of the best of the trip, offering panoramic sights of both sides of Porto. This was also an awesome experience because you can ride directly on the train tracks (when the trains aren’t coming) which made it even cooler to ride alongside a moving train! From the outside, it looked like an old-school whiskey bar for retirees, but inside, it had a unique, speakeasy-style vibe with creative cocktails. Even our Uber driver told us when we got there that it should be easy to get an Uber out of here, meaning he thought it didn’t look all that cool either. However when you walk in, you can see its anything but what you expected. The bar is adorned with the beautiful tiles that you see all around Porto, and theres even a vault that you can walk into where they keep their “money” behind bars. The drinks are great too- I got the one called “Ay Regina” which had chocolate and sesame oil- a weird combo I know- but it was delicious. The soupy lobster rice.This dish was unreal. It was packed with flavor, rich and comforting, and the lobster? They did not skimp on it. We had eight massive pieces of lobster plus an entire pan of soupy rice, all for less than what you’d pay for a single lobster tail at a restaurant in the U.S. This was easily one of the best meals of the trip, made even better by the delicious sangria and the beautiful view. As we walked back toward the beach, the restaurant staff even gave us a couple shots of ginja. As expected, it was super crowded, but it was still such a fun (and bumpy) ride through the historic streets. We didn’t get the best instructions on getting the tickets, so we ended up only getting a one-stop-only ticket. When we found this out, we thought we’d take it to the Miradouro de Santa Luzia, but, the tram ride ended and we were forced to get off. Another very confusing mishap. We ended up bolt-ing (the faster and wayyy more affordable version of Uber) to the viewpoint. Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, this temple is believed to be extremely powerful, and many devotees visit it before going to Ram Mandir, like we did. Before entering, we left our shoes at a shop and bought flowers for our offering from a vendor. The temple is located atop a hill, so we had to walk uphill to reach it. Now, this is where things got a little sus. Our driver—who, by the way, was wearing a long blonde wig (???)—motioned for us to follow him through these tiny, twisting alleys. And listen, if some random guy with a fake blonde wig told you to follow him into a maze of dimly lit passages, how would you feel? Exactly. But we kept walking. And suddenly, we stepped out of the alley, and there it was—the Ganges River. I swear, I got chills. And no, not because it was cold—it was literally 105°F outside. But something about that moment just hit me. I don’t even know how to explain it, but seeing the Ganges for the first time made me emotional. It felt like I was exactly where I was supposed to be. It was Holi—the festival of colors, and let me tell you, celebrating it in Varanasi was one of the coolest things I have ever experienced. I don’t even want to think about what was in that water. We definitely needed a shower after that. But aside from that one questionable moment, Holi in Varanasi was insane in the best way possible. The streets had color all over and there was water everywhere too. Seeing Varanasi during Holi was completely different than the day before- it went from a holy, sacred town to vibrant streets filled with laughter. It was so normal, yet so special. In Hinduism, cows are sacred and symbolize prosperity, motherhood, and non-violence. It was a perfectly cooked omelet, topped with a flavorful chicken which was almost like curry chicken, and served with Goa’s famous bread, poi. It was honestly one of the best things I ate on this trip, and after that, I ordered it every single morning. I tried poi at dinner the night before and loved it, but pairing it with this omelet was even better. Add in their fresh watermelon juice, and I could’ve stayed at breakfast all day. The instructors handed us small amounts of food (I think it was bread) to feed the fish, and the second I let go of it, fish swarmed me from every direction! It was insane—bright neon fish, striped ones, even some with rainbow patterns. This was such a cool experience! At one point, I just stood still, letting them swim all around me, and it felt like I was in some kind of real-life aquarium exhibit. They kept nibbling at my legs—not enough to hurt, but just enough to tickle like crazy! As we got closer, I could see people parasailing, snorkeling, and prepping for their seawalks. The platform is essentially a hub for various water activities, but I was focused on one thing—getting under that water and seeing the marine life up close. After arriving, the instructors handed us these astronaut-style helmets that supply oxygen while we’re underwater. The helmets are super heavy on land, but once you’re in the water, you don’t really notice them.
