Vieques, Puerto Rico
Our Unforgettable Day in Vieques, Puerto Rico
Our adventure to Vieques began with an exhilarating ferry ride from Ceiba, Puerto Rico. The tickets were incredibly affordable, costing just $2 per person each way. The 30-minute journey was quite the experience—waves crashing, ocean spray in our faces—it was a fun ride with the bonus of stunning Caribbean views. As we approached Vieques, the island's beauty was simply breathtaking, with lush greenery meeting pristine beaches.
Upon arrival, we faced the challenge of island transportation. A local offered us a car rental for the day at $100. The vehicle was... let's say, "full of character," but it suited our needs for the day's explorations. The rental process was uniquely informal; instead of paperwork, our "receipt" consisted of photos on our phone: one of the license plate, another of the VIN, and a selfie with the owner, my dad and the cash in his hand. It was so funny looking back on it, and made us question why he did this… did we just take a stolen car?!
One of the most charming aspects of Vieques is its free-roaming horses and chickens. These animals wander the island freely, often crossing roads and grazing by the beaches, adding to the island's charm.
Our first destination was Esperanza Beach, a picturesque spot known for its clear waters and proximity to local amenities like restaurants and shops. The highlight was the horses meandering along beach; one even approached me, which was so cool!
Next, we ventured to Playa Negra, the famed black sand beach. After a scenic 10-minute walk through nature, we arrived at this unique shoreline where dark volcanic sand mingles with lighter hues, creating a striking contrast. The surrounding cliffs added to the dramatic landscape, making it a photographer's dream.
For lunch, we dined at Bananas Restaurant in Esperanza. The laid-back atmosphere and delicious food provided the perfect midday meal. As dusk approached, we returned to the ferry terminal for our ride back. Reflecting on the day's adventures, Vieques had captivated us with its natural beauty, friendly locals, and unique experiences.
